The ‘Volcano Bubbles’ diving team and NISYRIO are pleased to announce the SPONGE PROJECT. It is an experiment to revive a marine habitat close to the Nisyrian coast by placing living sponges.
Practically, we sacrificed a sponge that was already on metal, we split it into pieces within the water and we tied up the pieces with bio strings on metallic surfaces, in a depth of about 7 meters and with a space between them of 20-30 cm.
Our goal is to observe if it is possible to revive a habitat that has been destroyed by various human activities since sponges hold the same role in the Mediterranean as the corals in the tropical seas, providing a shelter for various other spieces.
In spring we will return to understand I this experiment is successful and we will be happy to share more details for the procedure once the marine habitat has started being created.
